Guilt — a user's manual

Right. Since my long-winded, tedious style gets on a lot of people's nerves, this morning I am trying to present a subject important by any account — guilt — in a pointed, list form, though still tendentious. Here you are:

] One of the most common reasons we feel guilt is that we really are guilty.

] In relationships, guilt is an effective fuel in the short term, but a lethal poison in the long term.

] An interpretation of the previous point — you can play on your partner's guilt about specific things, but never establish a relationship on the basis of a division of roles into accuser and accused.

] Getting angry at the other because they made you feel guilty is usually an ineffective act, and rather cowardly too, if we're being fair.

] Never, ever have sex with the other because you feel guilty toward them. It will not compensate for anything.

] The psychological definition of "a rotten human being" is usually "a person incapable of feeling guilt."

] Without guilt there is no morality, and without morality there is no worthy human existence.

] It is always better to feel guilty because you acted wrongly than to feel guilty because you avoided acting. Proven.
