A good and stable love is the place where your world finally becomes logical.
On every trip abroad I understand afresh how complex and complicated this world has become, at levels we did not know in the past.
And that physical complexity, the excess of procedures and items of information we have to attend to, complicates us emotionally.
We do not know what is happening with us, where we are, and above all we do not know whether we are all right.
And in such situations, forgive the cliché — love is the answer.
Our aim is not to look for a click, or chemistry, or any shallow and empty buzzword that holds no water.
Our mission is to find somebody with whom we can sit down and draft a sensible emotional contract. As dry as that sounds, it is life-saving.
We undertake to one another to try to express positive feelings, always to give the other the benefit of the doubt, and to try to ease things for them physically and help them as best we can.
That is it. We need nothing more than that.
Obviously that is a logical position, but it takes time and effort to ripen into it.
There are things you have to understand about human beings and about yourself in order to get near it.
Chiefly this: that a contract of that kind is unimpressive on the day it is signed and decisive across a decade — whereas the click is thrilling on the day and predicts almost nothing. We are asked to choose between them at exactly the moment we are least equipped to, which is why so few people choose well, and why almost nobody regrets having chosen the contract.
