People always find themselves at a crossroads. A crossroads of choices, moments of change, situations requiring an important decision, whatever it may be.
And then they ask themselves all sorts of questions that assorted mentors and New Age priests have pushed into their heads:
Is this the right thing?
Is this the choice that suits me?
Will this help me realise myself?
And I'll stop there before I break into hysterical laughter.
Come down to earth, people. Here is what you actually need to ask yourselves:
What is the alternative?
Or in slightly more serious phrasing:
What are the alternatives standing before me right now, and what price can I, and am I willing to, pay for each of them?
True, that is far drier and far less dramatic, but if you always keep an eye open on the possibilities in the real world, and don't focus too much on yourselves, it may genuinely save your life.
Just saying.
Or as a very wise economist put it: in life there are no solutions, only trade-offs.
