When you dream of change, your eyes lift naturally upwards.
Onwards, outwards, far away from here, up above this dreary reality.
I am sorry, but it is likely that you are not really looking for change. You are looking for relief.
The two are easy to confuse because they feel identical from the inside — both are experienced as I cannot carry on like this — and because relief has the enormous advantage of being available immediately, whereas change is not available at all this week.
Good change begins when you bring your eyes back down to the familiar materials of your actual reality, and start making new use of them.
And that is the tremendous power of creative thinking.
Creative thinking rescues people from the pit not by granting them new, groundbreaking and astonishing ideas. That does happen, but it is very rare, and almost nobody's life turns on it.
Good, practical creativity makes you put old ideas to a new use. The same job, arranged differently. The same relationship, with one recurring conversation removed. The same week, with two hours defended.
It is unglamorous, and it is the only kind that has ever been observed to work.
And when it happens to you, you will discover not only that you like the result.
You will like yourself slightly more — because you will have evidence, for the first time in a while, that you are a person who can alter something.
